Askja – a barren landscape

Regarding the latest volcanic eruption on Iceland; here are some of the many photos i took during a visit to Askja on Iceland a few years ago. Please visit my Iceland Photo-gallery to see more!

One of the excursions went to Askja, a barren landscape just north of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. A really amazing place, just like visiting another world.

Askjuvatn is a large lake that fills much of the smaller caldera resulting from the 1875 eruption. On July 10, 1907, two German scientists, Walter von Knebel and Max Rudloff disappeared while exploring the lake in a small boat. A rock pyramid is raised as a memorial. (Photo Bjorn Grotting)

Askja is a stratovolcano situated in a remote part of the central highlands of Iceland. The name Askja refers to a complex of nested calderas within the surrounding Dyngjufjöll mountains, which rise to 1,510 m
